  • Office Hours: MWF, 10:30-11:20. If you prefer, contact me before or after class to make an appointment.
  • Texbook: Introduction to Analysis, by Edward D. Gaughan, Fourth edition.
  • Course Outline:

  • Goal of the Course:
The goal of Math 3341 is to obtain a solid understanding of the concepts of proofs related to Calculus materials and to be able to express this understanding in written or spoken form, using correct language and grammar.
By the end of the semester you will have acquired enough knowledge to be able to read a mathematical proof which will help to set up and solve problems which require understanding and use of basic theorems of Analysis.
  • Required Reading: Calculus 3112 (Second semester). The textbook is intended to be read. In full .
  • Fair Warning: Treat each topic as if you were meeting it for the first time, and be alert to make sure you understand each day's material before the next class meeting.
  • Exams: There will be two in class exams. You will receive at least six days notice of each exam date. You must notify me in advance if it is necessary for you to miss an exam. The final exam covers the entire course and will be held on Friday, May 9, 1:00PM-12:45
  • Quizes: Almost every week you will have a quize of ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Attendance Policy: Punctual attendance at all class meetings is a requirement for the course. The roll will be checked randomly. More than six unexcused absences will see you dropped from the class with an F grade. Unexcused late arrivals or early departures will count as unexcused absences.

  • Drop Policy. The class schedule lists Friday, February 21as the last day to drop with an automatic "W", while faculty-initiated coursedrops are possible until Friday, April 18. The instructor usually assigns a "W" for students dropping the course prior to this deadline. After the deadline, the course cannot be dropped.

  • Course Grade: At the end of the semester you will have percentage scores for:
each of your two in class exams.
    your Final exam.
    your quizes
    your Projects
The in class exams count 40%, the final exam will count 50% and the quizes will count 10% towards your overall class average.

  • Help: There is plenty of help available to you provided you are willing to take advantage of it. Specially this semester, we will make use of the internet to get organized help. This is specially interesting for students who can not work with groups on Campus.
Besides my office hours I will gladly meet with you on a drop in basis any time I am free to do so. Talk to me before or after class or by phone or by email to set up an appointment.
  • General remark:

If you have problems with the course material, need to be absent for a test, or have any other circumstance that may affect your performance in the course, contact me as soon as possible. I will do everything I can to enable you to succeed in this course and I expect you to be as diligent in your efforts as I am in mine.
